Gutenberg 24.1: custom blocks can now build responsive controls natively

Qamar Abbas 1 min read

The October 2026 “What’s new for developers” update on developer.wordpress.org brings a welcome change: Gutenberg 24.1 made the viewport state helpers public. The @wordpress/block-editor package now exports getStyleForState() and setStyleForState(), with new getSelectedBlockStyleState() and hasSelectedBlockStyleState() selectors in the block editor store. In practice, custom blocks can now offer per-breakpoint settings the way Core blocks do — a minimum height for the mobile breakpoint only, or a header that’s sticky on mobile and static on desktop — without private-API hacks.

For site owners, this means richer responsive options coming to block plugins and themes, and cleaner mobile experiences with fewer custom-CSS workarounds. If your site feels clumsy on phones, ask your developer whether your blocks are taking advantage of these native controls.
