WordPress Executive Director Mary Hubbard has asked more than 30 companies — hosting providers and plugin shops — to help fund WordPress’s security program, citing a surge in vulnerability reports and the fact that Automattic is currently its sole funder. Several companies expressed support while asking for clearer funding arrangements; Patchstack CEO Oliver Sild also urged changes to how contributors participate in security decisions.
WordPress security is a shared responsibility, and broader industry funding could mean faster patches and better disclosure processes for everyone running WordPress sites. Until then, site owners can’t outsource vigilance — timely updates and monitoring remain the best defense.
